For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10
Have you caught yourself at some point in the last few weeks asking, “Why is this happening?” Anytime we face hardship or confusing circumstances, we naturally want to know why. We assume there is a purpose to all this, and we would like to figure it out quick. Maybe if we learn our lesson quickly, the circumstances will change quickly. God certainly uses our circumstances to shape our character and strengthen our faith. There really is a purpose.
In fact, the world we live in is filled with purpose. By definition, purpose is the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists. Why do you go to work every day? To earn a living. Why does grass exist? To feed your cows and other animals. Why do ducks have webbed feet? To swim efficiently. Why do storms come? To test your faith. To remind you we need God. We could go on and on and on identifying why things are and for what purpose. The truth is our world is evidence of purpose, and purpose is evidence for God.
The Bible shows us that God created everything, and he did it on purpose. He created the world to function in a systematic and orderly way. He created things on purpose and for a purpose. There is a reason everything is here, and God has defined that reason. Psalm 19:1 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the sky above proclaims his handiwork.” God created the heavens and earth to put His nature and character on display.
And God created you on purpose and for a reason. In Ephesians 2:10, it says that you are God’s work of art, his masterpiece. He knows you well and knitted you together with great care. As he formed you, he already knew the life he desired for you. Like the rest of creation, you were made to glorify God and to do great things. Earlier in Ephesians 1:5-6 we learn that God planned ahead to adopt you into his family through faith in Jesus Christ “to the praise of his glorious grace.” You are significant and your life matters because God your Creator says so. Through Jesus Christ you can live your best life accomplishing the very purpose for which you were made.
Do you believe him? As you walk through hard times today and good times tomorrow are you aware of God’s purpose for you? God is constantly at work in you, helping you accomplish your God-given purpose. Trust Him and follow Him closely and you will see it through. As you go, go with confidence that God has plans for you and it matters. Live on purpose.
