If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!  Matthew 7:11

He looks forward to going home from work every day after sitting behind the desk for hours.  He knows behind that front door is his beautiful family.  As he opens the door, he is nearly barreled over by two kids bursting with energy, and he kisses his wife.  She’s ready for a break after teaching school, doing chores, and making sure these two kids play nice.  As he walks across the living room his son begins to climb on him as if he’s a monkey climbing a tree.  The daughter holds papers filled with colorful drawings or creative stories that she’s written ready for dad to see.  He can’t help but feel joy and pride in these moments.  He is a superhero, strong, smart, and loving. 

The word father brings to mind many different things for different people.  Some can recall moments like these growing up with their dad, and a smile crosses their face.  Others know exactly what it’s like to have kids so interested in you.  For others, the word father is a painful memory, or an absent memory altogether.  There are some who don’t really know what a father is supposed to be like.  There isn’t a perfect father on earth, but we have a Father in heaven who is perfect.  He is all powerful, all knowing, all loving, and all wise.  God the Father is near to His children. 

Over the last few blog posts, we’ve examined Isaiah 40 and learned that God is great.  God is trustworthy and He gives us hope for a future.  The Bible also reveals that God is a good Father.  He cares for His creation including every man, woman, and child.  God the Father is all powerful so that no danger or challenge can overcome Him.  God the Father is all knowing so that nothing confuses him or surprises him.  He is all loving.  This gives me great peace.  God the Father cares for you and me.  He desires that we be with Him, in His family, forever.  God the Father is all wise.  His instruction, advice, and direction are good and reliable. 

One day my kids will no longer think I’m the strongest.  They will learn that I am not as smart as they once thought (no comment please).  There will be a time when I disappoint them, and they doubt my love for them.  Someday they will not come to me for advice because they prefer someone else’s.  But I pray that they will always seek God the Father.  His love for them will never fail.  His knowledge and wisdom are perfect.  He is able to do for them what no one else (not even their dad) can accomplish.

Do you know God the Father?  Many in the world think that every person is a child of God, but that’s not quite true.  John 1:12-13 says of Jesus, “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.”  You see, only those who have believed in the name of Jesus call God father.  No matter what your idea of father is today, God is a Father available to you now.  I encourage you to trust in Him and follow His lead in being a good father.
