Pleasing in His Sight

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock, and my redeemer.  Psalm 19:14

Have you seen a look of disappointment on someone else?  Have you worn a look of disappointment yourself?  I can remember many times I have disappointed someone, especially someone I love.  As a kid, I could be pretty arrogant and unapologetic for my unwise choices, but there were times when I knew my parents were disappointed in me.   That disappointment hurt more than any punishment they could give.  I don’t think anyone wants to disappoint anyone else, especially those they love, but we do it.  I can let others down when I don’t come through on a promise, or I intentionally break someone’s trust.  Then we see that look of disappointment on our loved one’s face and we feel that sinking hurt in the pit of our stomach.

In Psalm 19:14, the writer prays, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.”  Surely, he desires to please the Lord and not disappoint Him.  We disappoint the Lord when we disbelieve or disobey.  Can you think of times recently when you didn’t believe God for something?  Perhaps you didn’t believe He would forgive you, or you didn’t believe He could provide.  Your disbelief led you to make some unwise choices and bring disappointment.  Faith in God certainly pleases Him.  In fact, it is impossible to please God without faith (Hebrews 11:6).

Our disobedience also disappoints the Lord.  He has revealed to us in the Bible how we can live, speak, and ponder what is good in life.  As we look to the life and ministry of Jesus in the New Testament, we see the example of how we are to live obediently.  But whenever we unwisely choose what feels good over what is good, we disappoint the Lord.  Whenever we choose what the world says is right over what God’s words says is right, we disappoint the Lord.  No one wants to disappoint those they love.  How well do you love God?

Let our prayers today be like the psalmist, “Let the words of my mouth and the mediations of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord.”  Let us believe God and obey God.  Let our lives be pleasing this year and not disappointing.
