When Things Aren’t as Expected

The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.  Proverbs 16:9

Have you had one of those days when things did not work out the way you planned?  You took the time to schedule and prepare for that day, and everything seemed to go wrong.  Maybe it was that vacation day to the beach you planned, and rain ruined your efforts.  Or maybe you worked on a presentation for work, and none of the technology cooperated that day.  Sometimes no matter how much we plan or pay attention to details life has a way of throwing things off.

How do you respond when things aren’t as expected?  I get frustrated.  I hate to admit it, but I do.  I thrive in structure and order.  I want to know what’s happening next.  And when the unexpected happens, I squirm.  Sometimes in those moments I become rude to others, and things go downhill from there.  Often, I fail to remember that God is still at work even through the broken plans.

I love Proverbs 16:9 above because it reminds me that even when our plans don’t work out, God still gives us firm ground to stand on.  When you delight in God and pursue Him, He will guide your steps toward what is best for you.  And often what God has planned for us is better than any plans we can make for ourselves.

Your failures don’t make you a failure.  Instead they show off the power of God.  God is always at work leading us closer to Him.  Let’s trust Him today, even when things aren’t as expected, and see what He will do.
